Course Description

Participants will learn the nuts and bolts of the therapy model, Multi-Modal Attachment Therapy (M-MAT), for working with children with early disrupted/injured attachment, and their families.

M-MAT is an integrated, whole-brain approach to attachment trauma in children and families developed over 25 years of working with this population. 

Participants  will learn the broad concepts, components and structure of M-MAT, as well as detailed interventions and specifics on how to implement M-MAT with clients. The material will be presented and taught through video lecture and video examples, and reinforced through brief quizzes. Interventions taught will include both bottom-up, sensorimotor interventions, and top down, cognitive interventions, in a whole-brain approach.

Participants will learn the therapy model, M-MAT, Multi-Modal Attachment Therapy. They will understand the unique therapeutic needs of children with attachment challenges, and how M-MAT addresses those needs. They will learn the concepts, components and structure of M-MAT, along with specific interventions, and how to put them all together into a cohesive, effective, structured therapy.

  • Identify the 3-part structure of an M-MAT parent/child session.
  • Name the 4 sensorimotor elements of M-MAT Attachment-Based Play.
  • Assess whether an activity meets the criteria of M-MAT Attachment-Based Play.
  • Identify the 2 core M-MAT re-storying interventions.
  • List 3 areas of skill-building and psychoeducation relevant to children with attachment injuries.
  • Describe 3 attachment sensitive interventions to address behavioral concerns.

Catherine A. Young, LMFT

Catherine Young, M.S., LMFT, is an author, trainer, speaker, consultant, clinical supervisor, and child and family therapist. She has devoted over 25 years to working with children and families in settings as diverse as early childhood mental health, children's day treatment and intensive outpatient services, foster and adoption agencies, and youth probation. Catherine is the founder of a new attachment-based therapy model for helping children with some of the most challenging and treatment-resistant behaviors and their families: Multi-Modal Attachment Therapy (M-MAT).
She is the author or two books, one for therapists and one for parents/caregivers.

M-MAT Training Institute (Provider# 1032327) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) to sponsor continuing education for LMFT's, LCSW's, LPCC's and LEP's. The M-MAT Training Institute (MMATTI) maintains responsibility for the program and all its content.

This course meets the qualifications for 7 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT's, LCSW's, LPCC's and LEP's as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. *

Course Completion/Continuing Education Credit certificates come with the course and will be awarded at the end of the course upon successful completion  of the post test (at least 70% correct in 3 tries) and completion of the course evaluation form, per CAMFT requirements.

On-Demand Video Courses: M-MAT Training Institute does not provide refunds for online on-demand courses.
Live Online Courses: Live courses can be cancelled up to 7 days before the course start date for a full refund by emailing admin@mmatti.org.
